Attack on Planet Falrus

Attack on Planet Falrus is a middle-grade, sci-fi story about Falrus, a planet on the other side of the Line Desimak. In this universe, the OLD world (Outside Line Desimak) is divided from Falrus via this dividing line, which up until this point, these two worlds have never interacted. The essence of the plot is that transportation between these once separate worlds is now possible.

The narrative follows a few perspective characters, and depending on the chapter it is in first person sometimes and third at others. The narrative style is a bit unconventional in that regard. Indeed, the story is a wild and unpredictable ride. I was often left wondering what would happen next.

The main characters are Giren and his friend Square, who I think are about 11. They form a bond with a robot, whom they call Professor Potty.

The book has a sense of humor. For example, when the children do manage to make it across Line Desimak, they are captured by local authorities. The authorities are perplexed by the children's story. These 11-year-old kids are from another planet? They are further perplexed when the children pass a lie detector test, confirming this fact.

Throughout the book, there is quite a bit of talk about science. In a funny exchange, Giren, who doesn't want to reveal that he has been hanging out with a mysterious robot to his father, backs himself into a lie: He claims there is a special magnet he needs for his chemistry set. His father immediately sees through this lie, but doesn't press him on.

In the book, there are some wild theories about science. The nature of this universe is discussed at some length and establishes the two sides. The book also explains other science principles of this world that were a bit over my end.

Ultimately, the book has an unconventional narrative with a wild story that will keep you wondering what’s next. For those who like a wide cast of characters and a unique premise, this book may be worth exploring. See you on the other side of Line Desimak.
